The No. 10 LSU softball team and No. 8 James Madison squared off in Game 1 of the NCAA Super Regional in Harrisonburg, Virginia on Friday.
Both pitching staffs combined to allow five runs and dominated the contest, which induced the pitcher’s duel.
The Dukes (49-5) ultimately defeated the Tigers (48-16) 3-2 to put themselves within one victory of the Women’s College World Series.
LSU opened up the scoring, after sophomore second baseman Constance Quinn notched a RBI-double to score junior first baseman Sahvanna Jaquish. JMU responded an inning later.
Dukes sophomore first baseman Megan Good blasted a 2-2 pitch down the left field line to tie the game. In the fifth, LSU senior left fielder Sandra Simmons sent a ball thrown by Good, who had moved into the circle, over the left field wall to give the Tigers the lead again.
Good wasn’t ready to quit.
The sophomore helped her own cause with another solo shot to equalize the contest in the bottom half of the frame. She had to enter the circle after senior Jailyn Ford sustained an injury in the third inning sliding into second, which could hurt James Madison in the rest of the series.
After a scoreless sixth, Hoover allowed a leadoff single, a bunt single and a walk to load the bases with one out. Quinn recorded the second out, and the Tigers were nearly out of the jam.
But they couldn’t find the third.
James Madison designated player Jessica Mrozek hit a RBI-single to claim game one for the home team. The victory moved the Dukes to 18-0 at home this season, and LSU will enter Saturday with its back against the wall.
The Tigers will be in a must-win situation when the teams clash in Game 2 at 11 a.m. If LSU evens the series, a third contest will be played at 2 p.m. to decide who will advance the Women’s College World Series.
