LSU junior swimmer Kara Kopcso and freshman swimmer Thomas Smith collected Southeastern Conference weekly awards after combining for four event wins against Missouri on Thursday, the conference announced Tuesday.
Kopcso was named the SEC Female Athlete of the Week as she continued her undefeated reign of dual meets this season with victories in the women’s 100 and 200 butterfly and the women’s 200 individual medley against Missouri. The award tallies the second SEC honor this season for the Mandeville, Louisiana native.
Smith became the first LSU swimmer since Andrei Tuomola in 2010 to be named the SEC Male Freshman Athlete of the Week. Against Missouri, Smith set the pool record for the men’s 200 backstroke with a time of 1:43.92 and finished second in the men’s 100 backstroke and men’s 200 individual medley.
