In response to a Daily Reveille request, members of the “In Focus” Student Government campaign removed a picture of the newspaper’s front page from their Web site Tuesday night.
The picture — which the campaign posted on its Web site at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday — included a photograph of Heath Hattaway, “In Focus” SG presidential candidate, speaking at Monday’s SG debate.
Hattaway said his campaign did not know they had not done anything wrong. He said the photo was posted to rally his campaign supporters.
“It was the first photo of the ‘In Focus’ campaign in the paper,” Hattaway said. “We simply wanted to showcase the debate.”
Jerel Parenton, Student Media computer manager, said the picture might give students the impression that The Daily Reveille is supporting the “In Focus” campaign.
The Daily Reveille’s policy is not to endorse any candidate.
“In light of the recent misspelling of the Reveille’s Web address involving the ‘Making It Happen’ campaign, some people may think the newspaper is supporting the ‘In Focus’ ticket,” Parenton said.
He was referring to a Web site redirect from www.lsurevielle.com — which inverts the “i” and “e” in “Reveille” — to the Michelle Gieg and Patrick Downs-led campaign’s Web site. The redirect was stopped after a request from The Daily Reveille.
Parenton said linking to a Web site is not illegal, but using the newspaper’s logo without permission — the way the Hattaway campaign did — could infringe on copyright laws.
