Ticket leaders for the “In Focus” campaign have decided not to pursue questions of misconduct by a “Making It Happen” volunteer and the commissioner of elections, citing an uncertainty about “the facts” of the actions in question.
Heath Hattaway “In Focus” presidential candidate, said his ticket will not question the activities of Crawford Leavoy, a “Making It Happen” volunteer, who aided Devin Reid, Student Government commissioner of elections, in writing a brief that prevented John Magliolo, an “In Focus” candidate, from running for office.
The Daily Reveille reported March 18 that Leavoy helped Reid write a brief used in a University Court hearing before spring break.
SG adviser K.C. White said no complaints have been filed through the University Court or any other branch of SG. She said any complaint would have to come from a student.
She also said that there were no “credible” witnesses of Leavoy’s and Reid’s collaboration to pursue the issue any further.
“Most have moved on,” she said. “They are ready for the elections.”
The Daily Reveille reported that several people heard Leavoy say he wrote the brief.
“I think [the Reveille article] outlined the true facts of the case,” Leavoy said. “Students can draw their own opinions.”
Magliolo said that he will not pursue the issue.
“I just questioned Devon Reid’s character as the commissioner of elections,” he said. “I think it doesn’t say much for any of their integrity.”
The “In Focus” ticket will continue to campaign today for the election.
“We feel there are more important things for our campaign to focus on than that issue,” Hattaway said.
Hattaway said that he was not sure there was enough information to make a case and he did not know the amount of help, if any, that was given by Leavoy.
“I’m just going to let it go,” he said.
In response to claims that Reid acted wrongly with Leavoy, he will continue as commissioner of elections.
“I am committed to ensuring a fair and ordered General Election that will proceed as planned,” Reid said.
Michelle Gieg, “Making It Happen” presidential candidate, said it was not an issue with the ticket.
“It was an individual helping someone with Student Government,” she said.
