There was dancing, laughing, socializing and Mardi Gras festivities last night at the Residence Hall Association-sponsored Mardi Gras Ball for students at the Faculty Club.
Students from all over campus came together to celebrate the upcoming Mardi Gras holiday. The Faculty Club was decorated in green, yellow and purple, and food was provided for the revelers. A disc jockey provided music as students took to the dance floor.
After a period of turmoil in the RHA staff, a once-doubtful program came together with many students attending.
Doug Fields, RHA president, said he was excited at the turnout and success of the program.
Liz Parks, a communication disorders freshmen, said she was enjoying herself at the ball.
“It’s a lot of fun and a good idea,” she said.
The room had been decorated to match the occasion, with beads provided for students.
Kawanda Richardson sat to the side enjoying the party.
“I think it’s beautiful,” she said. “I like the scenery, and it’s a really nice atmosphere.”
Ball-goers said the ball allowed students from other areas to learn about a holiday that is foreign to those not from south Louisiana.
Nik Clegorne, the Residence Life coordinator at West Campus Apartments, said the ball was a good opportunity for students on campus to get involved and meet people.
“It’s a really good opportunity for students to come out and enjoy the Louisiana culture,” he said. “There are a lot of people here not from Louisiana.”
Awed by the whole event, Nealy Orillion, a psychology freshmen, said she was impressed.
“It’s really nice, and it looks amazing,” she said.
