In front of the sold-out crowd at Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the University crowned last night its first Mardi Gras Mambo King and Queen — Student Government President Brad Golson and Panhellenic Council President Ashley Davis.
Students crammed the PMAC to see the Lady Tigers’ basketball game. But basketball was not the only entertainment of the night. Students also came to see who would be elected the first King and Queen.
Last week, students were able to vote via PAWS.
Jennifer Fleming, a marine biology senior, said she learned about last night’s game from the election.
Dressed in matching “Beat Tennessee” shirts, the Mardi Gras Mambo Court was presented to the fans before the game on the basketball court.
At halftime, the King and Queen were announced and then reigned over a procession lead by the Treme Brass Band. The Mambo Court danced and tossed beads and souvenirs to shouting fans as they followed the brass band around the PMAC.
Davis, who was crowned Queen, said it was a great opportunity for students to attend a nationally televised game.
“It’s so much fun and an exciting time,” she said.
Golson, who was crowned King, said he was excited to see so many students at the game.
“Our spring sports are just as exciting as fall sports,” he said. “Athletics are doing a great thing to get students and fans excited and here for the games.”
Brandon Smith, a political science senior, said he was honored to be a part of the first court, which he thinks should be continued each year.
“It’s a great opportunity to get fans involved and recognize students around campus,” he said.
