The No. 3-ranked LSU women’s basketball team remained undefeated over the weekend after going 2-0 at the 2005 Miami Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Fla.
LSU (4-0) defeated Nebraska 74-55 on Friday, followed by a 74-45 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
“It was obvious from the start that our kids were focused,” LSU coach Pokey Chatman said in a news release. “That is something we emphasized. Overall, we are pleased with the effort and know we still have some things to correct.”
The Tigers have won four consecutive games.
In the first game of the tournament against Nebraska, the Lady Tigers started slow, falling behind 36-30 in the first half. Yet it was the tale of two halves as LSU started the second half on a roll, taking a 37-36 lead three minutes into the game.
LSU cruised from then on, taking a 46-36 lead before Nebraska scored its first points of the second half.
The Lady Tigers were led by sophomore center Sylvia Fowles, who finished with a career-high 23 points and nine rebounds.
Senior Seimone Augustus notched 24 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Quianna Chaney added 11 points and six assists.
Nebraska was led by guard Kiera Hardy, who finished with 26 points and five steals.
Chatman said LSU stepped up in the second half to earn the win.
“We had a little more mental toughness in the second half, and some people locked in with their intensity,” Chatman said.
The Lady Huskers committed 25 turnovers while shooting just 38.9 percent. LSU finished the contest shooting 55.6 percent while forcing 18 steals.
In the second game, LSU used a 13-0 run in the first half en route to a 74-45 victory over Texas A&M-CC.
After taking a 44-18 lead heading into the half, the Lady Islanders never came within 20 points.
Augustus earned her 66th straight double-figure scoring game with a game-high 19 points. Augustus is just eight points away from becoming the fourth player in school history to reach 2,000 career points.
Led by a 61.3 percent shooting percentage in the second half, LSU finished the game shooting 50 percent while holding the Lady Islanders to 31.4 percent from the floor.
No Lady Islanders player managed to reach double digits. Senior Terra Andrews led the Lady Islanders with nine points on two-of-seven shooting.
