Phi Mu: Supporting Miracles
Man of the Year contest benefits local children
If you noticed a shortage of female students wandering campus Wednesday night, then you are not alone.
Phi Mu sorority presented the 3rd annual Man of the Year competition in support of the Children’s Miracle Network.
The competition, an open call-pageant featuring 14 men from all areas of campus, is the main philanthropy project Phi Mu sponsors every year.
After raising nearly $20,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital last year, pageant organizers remain optimistic about this year’s outcome.
“We are trying to put a little more emphasis on the kids and the [Children’s Miracle] Network,” said Claire Zaunbrecher, the chairwoman of the Man of the Year contest. “We won’t know for sure what the grand total is for a few days, but we expect at least as much as last year. The money that is raised by the competition is given right back to our community through the Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Research Center,” Zaunbrecher said.
The contestants, who were judged on casual wear, talent, interview and formal wear, ranged from freshmen to seniors.
“The guys have been so great,” Zaunbrecher said. “They pay a small fee to be in it and then help us make a lot of money for a very needy cause.”
Representing Kappa Sigma fraternity, this year’s Man of the Year, Aaron LaRose, won the hearts of the judges and beat the competition by playing the piano for a room full of women.
“I am just glad I could help,” said LaRose. “I didn’t really expect to win but I have had a lot of fun.”
Robert Tanory, representing Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, won the people’s choice award, an award voted on by the audience.
“Overall, I think it went great,” Zaunbrecher said. “We had the support of the audience, the CMN kids and the contestants. Everyone worked very hard and accomplished a lot. I am very pleased.”
