Scandal in the making? Get the facts
Scandal?
Academic Misconduct?
Sexual harassment?
The Death Penalty?
The next thing we’ll all be hearing is that Skip Bertman is a drug dealer (Don’t be fooled, this is also an untrue rumor).
I’ve heard it all this week. Rumors are surfacing everywhere alleging that some facet of the LSU Athletic Department has acted wrongly.
Let me reiterate — RUMORS are surfacing everywhere.
I find it distasteful and unprofessional to report something without the facts, though, and I refuse to accuse anyone in the LSU athletic department of anything until all the facts surface.
Other journalists and other newspapers seem to feel differently, though, and I disagree with what they are doing.
Reports are surfacing throughout the state of some kind of allegations, most of which don’t even include a name of the person bringing about the allegations.
These reports are doing more than just giving the LSU Athletic Department “a black eye” which may not even be deserved. These — possibly untrue — reports are damaging the name of the University, the students, the athletes, the coaches, the city of Baton Rouge and the state of Louisiana.
I’m not saying the athletic department hasn’t done anything wrong. I’m just not going to make accusations that could cause great harm to the Athletic Department’s image until I am thoroughly convinced the accusations are true.
I also find it very encouraging to see the University’s administrators working so diligently and efficiently to get the facts and find a solution.
“I’m very impressed with what the University is doing at this point,” Southeastern Conference Commissioner Roy Kramer said during a visit to the University Tuesday. “They are making all the right moves and decisions as you do when you move through one of these situations.”
So, today’s life lesson is simple: Before you go claiming Nick Saban is an alcoholic, get your facts first (Yes, that is also an untrue rumor).
