The LSU men’s golf team will make its 20th appearance in the 23rd edition of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern on Saturday and Sunday in Statesboro, Ga.
LSU claimed its only championship in the tournament in 1989 with a 9-under par 207. The Tigers must defeat eight teams ranked in Golf Digest’s Top 25 to claim its second championship.
This year’s field of 15 teams includes No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Augusta State, No. 3 Florida and No. 5 Wake Forest. Southeastern Conference foes No. 14 Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina and Tennessee also join LSU.
The teams will play 36 holes starting at 8 a.m. Saturday and finish the tournament with a round of 18 holes on Sunday at 8 a.m.
The Tigers placed No. 11 out of 13 teams in last weekend’s tournament at the University of Alabama. LSU shot a 50-over par 902 in the 54-hole tournament.
Tiger golfer Heath West led LSU tying for No. 30 on the individual leaderboard. The sophomore shot a 10-over par 223 for the tournament.
LSU head coach Greg Jones re-emphasized the need for more consistency on the team from top to bottom after the eleventh place showing.
“We just shot way too many doubles and triples today, and that is the bottom line,” Jones said. “We need to get some more consistent rounds to be more successful.”
