Eight teams descend on the Bernie Moore Track Stadium today and Saturday when LSU hosts its first outdoor meet of 2003 for the LSU Tiger Relays.
LSU head coach Pat Henry said this weekend’s meet will be the first for most of the team because most of the team’s athletes did not compete in last week’s meet at Mississippi State so those athletes who competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships could rest.
This being LSU’s second meet of the outdoor season, Henry wants the Tigers to use the meet as a stepping stone toward the Outdoor National Championships.
“You always look forward to running at LSU. There’s no question about it,” Henry said. “Our goal in track and field is not wins and losses. We’re really performance based. It’s trying to get that performance a little bit better each time we get on the track.”
LSU junior Muna Lee is one Tiger who returns to action for the first time outdoors this season. Lee led the Lady Tigers to their second-consecutive NCAA Indoor National Championship two weeks ago. She won individual titles in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.
Lee looks forward to starting the outdoor season. She said the 4×400-meter relay is her favorite outdoor event.
“I look forward to running the relay,” Lee said. “It was fun last year, and we were good. There’s so much excitement in the relay.”
Teams competing in this weekend’s meet include Idaho, UL-Monroe, UL-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, New Orleans, Saint John’s and Southeast Louisiana. The event preliminaries get underway today at 4 p.m., while the final heats are scheduled to start Saturday at noon.
