The Citizens Against the Serial Killer have started giving free self-defense classes for all citizens ages 13 to 21 in response to the increased demand for self-defense classes.
Lisa, the CASK president who did not want her last name printed, said Casino Rouge donated the use of two rooms, and Billy Brown, chief of Martial Arts Unlimited, donated his time to teach the class.
Lisa said at the LSU Town Hall Meeting held March 26, a young woman said she was on a waiting list for a waiting list for Rape Aggression Defense classes.
“We felt like they need self-defense now,” Lisa said. “They can still take their RAD class, but this is just extra information and safety tips.”
The class is being offered every other Saturday beginning April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Lisa said this is a hands-on experience to teach the average woman how to physically defend herself against an attacker.
The class is designed to give participants information about what a criminal wants, how to survive and how to use everyday weapons to protect oneself.
Participants must call CASK at 225-892-2911 to sign up before each class. People also can sign up at www.cask.la.info/discussion_ board.
Lisa said there is no limit to the number of times a person can take the class.
Also this weekend, the families of the unsolved murder victims will hold another rally on the steps of the state capitol Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m.
In addition to the victims’ families, Buddy Leach, a gubernatorial candidate, will be speaking about his view on violence against women.
