Only a few weeks into the spring semester, students already are thinking ahead to those nine days in April when they can forget about books, exams and term papers and focus on some much needed recreation — Spring Break!
From April 12 to April 20 many students will travel away from home in search of a good time. The question is: What are the most popular vacation spots among students?
Joseph Morel, a political science and international studies junior, said Jamaica would be first on his list.
“I’ve heard the entire country smells like marijuana,” he said. “I want to see if it’s true.”
Morel said the culture of places like Jamaica and Mexico also appeal to him, but he also would be happy in Colorado’s ski resorts. However, because of the high costs of these trips he may only visit a destination in the country.
Emily Blake, a STA adviser, said while many students will come to her agency to inquire about exotic island resorts and transatlantic getaways, only a few actually end up booking these kind of trips.
“The price scares them off,” she said.
Blake said the destinations students inquire about most are Jamaica, Cancun and Europe. A weeklong stay at an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica can run up to $1,100, she said.
“It’s not that much, but most students don’t have $1,100 to drop,” Blake said.
Sunny Zeringue, a general studies junior, plans to work during Spring Break instead of vacationing, but said many of her friends are planning to go to places such as Panama City Beach, Fla. and South Padres Islands, Texas.
“They’re the cheapest and closest vacation spots,” she said.
Lorelei Nicholson, a psychology sophomore, said while a cruise to the Caribbean or the Bahamas would be her dream vacation, Florida holds enough excitement to satisfy her.
“I would love to go to Miami so I can go scuba diving,” she said.
Nicholson said Coconut Grove near Miami, also known as “The Grove,” is another fun spot for shopping opportunities.
However, there are students, such as geology freshman Matt Burton, who will get to experience a little bit of paradise.
“I’m going to the Caribbean for Spring Break: warm water and clear skies every day,” Burton said.
Although students may be looking forward to spending Spring Break at the location of their dreams, many likely will have to make the most with the location of their budget.
“It’s all about what you can afford,” Blake said.
Seeing is believing
