For the first time since 1998, the Panhellenic Council will sponsor spring recruitment for University women.
The council voted to allow sororities to recruit members up to the average chapter size of 215, said Angela Guillory, Greek Affairs interim assistant director.
Elizabeth LeBlanc, former council delegate for her sorority, sat on the Panhellenic Council when it voted for spring recruitment.
“We decided it was something that is done at other universities,” LeBlanc said. “It helps to bring everyone to a level playing field.”
During fall recruitment, sororities use a quota system for the average number of girls they can recruit, Guillory said.
The chapters at or above this size are not allowed to participate in spring recruitment.
The names of the sororities participating in spring recruitment were not released at the request of the sororities, said Markell Palombo, Panhellenic Council vice president of recruitment. Names will be given to those who apply with Greek Affairs.
LeBlanc said only good things can come out of this process. It is a trial run to see how members like the process, but so far everyone is open-minded, she said.
The spring recruitment process will be different than in fall, Guillory said. Potential members participate by invitation only. They will attend informal gatherings set up by individual sororities. At the end, each sorority will extend a bid to potential members.
The Panhellenic Council organized spring recruitment from Feb. 1- April 11.
Greek Affairs also will have a table in Free Speech Alley Feb. 4-6 for students to fill out an application.
