In LSU’s more than 100-year history, students have seen trends come, go and reappear. While not everyone followed fashion trends and some even refused to abide by them, each decade has its own unique style that makes its identification easy.
According to the “L”-book, in the early days of the University, only men passed through the halls. Once the co-eds came to the University, fashion became an important aspect of the University community.
Old Gumbos display the various fashion trends throughout the years. While the ’30s and ’40s were characterized by long skirts and coiffed hair, the ’50s were the decade of the poodle skirt and the blue jean. The ’60s saw the rise of flipped-out hair and short skirts, while the ’70s introduced bell-bottoms and feathered hair. The ’80s made permed and teased hair cool while the ’90s hailed Scrunchies and spiked hair.
Fashion trends continue to thrive. Take a walk in the Quad and trends are everywhere. From capri pants to trucker hats to permed hair, fashions come and go, making each year and each decade unique.
