What follows is a response to comments in last week’s “Off the Cuff” columns. Anna Byars wrote about a man with a mustache who asked her to move her car, which was parked in his driveway. Her comments were inappropriate and, by way of apology, The Reveille would like to give that man, Julio Romanach Jr., this space to respond:
I am the person that Anna Byars refers to as the “Mustache Man of State Street.” I am a man. I have a mustache. One of the vehicles that I own is an old Chevrolet Suburban.
I own a house on State Street and that property does have a driveway. In order to facilitate use of my property, I do not allow others to park in my driveway without permission.
In two separate articles printed on Sept. 23 and 26, in this column, Anna Byars made false, insulting and highly inflammatory statements about me.
I have only met this person once and then for a brief moment, as follows: On Saturday, Sept. 13, at approximately 11:45 a.m. I attempted to park my 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier in the driveway of my property on State Street, when I noticed that there was a vehicle already parked there preventing appropriate use thereof. I parked near the intruding vehicle and inquired from one of the neighbors as to the ownership thereof.
I was advised that it was owned by one of the girls that lived in the upstairs apartment. I went upstairs and knocked on the door. Ms. Byars opened the door furiously, and in a loud and unfriendly tone stated as follows: “I’ll move my f–(expletive) car, O.K.?” Before I could thank her, Ms. Byars slammed the door in my face. I turned around and went back to my car.
Shortly thereafter another girl came downstairs from the Byars apartment and moved the Byars vehicle out of my driveway.
I did not speak a word to either Ms. Byars or the person that moved her vehicle.
I do not know why Ms. Byars alleges that she is in fear of physical harm from me. She has no rational basis for her alleged fear. I have never spoken a word to her.
I do hope that she keeps her word and stays out of my driveway. For the sake of those that read this column, I also hope that she finds more interesting topics about which to write.
