The LSU women’s golf team finished third out of a eld of 17 at the LSU Cleveland Golf Classic, with scores of 301-306-306 for a total of 49 strokes over par.
North Carolina won the tournament with a score of 306-305-292 for a total of +39 strokes, while in-state rival Tulane nished second with scores of 308-296-302 for a total of +42.
The Lady Tigers nished in front of No. 22 Furman who nished fth with a score of +58.
The team also nished in front of all the Southeastern Conference foes in the tournament which included: Ole Miss (4), Alabama (6), South Carolina (7), Mississippi State (10), and Kentucky (13).
Final individual scores for the Lady Tigers include Brooke Shelton 74-72-79, (tied third), Melissa Eaton 72-80-85, (tied 17th), Alexis Rather 76-80-88 (tied 23rd), Nicola Eaton 79-77-88 (tied 23rd) and Isabel Dornellas 81-77-93 (tied 36th).
In round one Friday, the Lady Tigers shot a 301 for a +13, putting them in second place overall. Melissa Eaton shot even par 72 and nished the day tied for second. Shelton shot +2 and tied for sixth. Rather shot +4 and tied for 13th. Nicola Eaton shot +7 and tied for 35th, and Dornellas shot +9 and tied for 48th.
Coach Karen Bahnsen said the team did well despite the conditions.
“I was first of all very excited we were able to get the round in with the potential weather problems we could have had,” Bahnsen said after Friday’s round. “We were able to dodge the rain, and all of the players were dealing with the same wind problems. I thought the scores were good considering the circumstances. We were very close to making a lot of putts and we’re very happy with our position in the tournament at this moment.”
In round two Saturday, the Lady Tigers shot a 306 for +18 and still in second place overall. Shelton shot even par 72 to give her an overall score of +2 and tied for second. Melissa Eaton shot 80 for a +8 overall and 12th place. Rather shot 80 and tied for 26th, with teammate Nicola Eaton who shot 77 in the round. Dornellas shot 77 to give her an overall score of +14 and 36th.
Bahnsen said the team got off to a good start, but then made too many mistakes on Saturday.
“We started off in the morning pretty good,” Bahnsen said. “I mean we were on fire, but we made a few errors which cost us.”
