Equipment is being shipped to the University that will help improve research and technological development.
Computing Services recently received a $460,000 donation from Hewlett Packard for new machines planned to go in the Fred C. Frey Computing Services Building.
“Hewlett Packard is excited about things being done at LSU,” Hay said. “They were impressed with what we were doing and wanted to recognize that — it was a no-strings-attached donation.”
The machines increase storage space and provide more high-speed access to data.
The donation comes after Computing Services received a $1 million donation from the Louisiana Technology Innovations Fund, said Ron Hay, director of Computing Services.
“The HP donation will augment that award,” Hay said. “With both awards, we have 1.5 million dollars to support the new Linux cluster.”
Linux is an operating system, like Microsoft Windows, capable of running multiple applications across campus on one set of hardware.
The new technology hardware will aid research at the University, as well as benefit Louisiana.
“We hope to use the technology to make some aerial photography data software,” said Bill Beyer, director of the technology support center. “The data may eventually be available on the Web for GIS projects.”
The technology brings a new and creative application to the University.
The $1 million dollar award from the Louisiana Technology Innovations Fund was the fourth from the organization originally established by former Gov. Mike Foster.
