The Union Program Council will offer a bigger and better “LSU Idol” competition among other festivities tomorrow night at the Union as its monthly Late Night LSU event continues.
Tryouts for “LSU Idol,” which is similar to the American Idol singing competition, will begin at 10 p.m. in the Cotillion Ballroom. The first round of tryouts will be a cappella, followed by additional rounds with a karaoke machine.
Another event will be “Let’s Make a Deal,” where students will have the opportunity to win prizes including items such as a TV and gift certificates to local businesses. Other events include a “Bungee Run,” where students are hooked up to bungee cords and race with one another until the bungee snaps them back, and “Wax Hands,” where students can make molds of their hands using paraffin wax.
Jason Meier, assistant director for programs at the LSU Union, thinks students should attend Late Night LSU for many reasons.
“It’s a great chance to blow steam, relax, and meet new people,” he said.
The event always draws a large crowd, with attendance anywhere from the usual minimum of 1,000 to the record-breaking 2,400 people, according to Meier.
“Our crowd is generally the same type of people,” said Lucas Lane, a mass communication freshman who serves as assistant chair for campus involvement. “It’s only once a month so it’s not a big commitment; a lot of people come back. We have free pizza and drinks at the end of the night. There are a wide variety of things to do because it’s really a ton of different things.”
Other events for tomorrow night include a Cranium tournament, a showing of the film “Whale Rider,” decorate your own sugar cookie, John Madden Football games and Dance Dance Revolution on a big screen, a live DJ, board games, caricatures drawn by an artist, free bowling and billiards, and free pizza and soda at 1:15 a.m. Sidepocket snack bar and PJ’s coffee will remain open until 1 a.m.
Late Night LSU is sponsored by the Tigers after Ten commission, an organization composed of student volunteers who organize the monthly event.
“They do it because they love LSU, and they love putting it on for people,” Meier said.
The event lasts from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and is free for students with an LSU ID. Students may bring one guest, who must be at least 18 years of age.
