The LSU men’s and women’s track and field team ran away from the competition this weekend at the 4th Annual Armory Invitational in New York City.
The Tigers finished first with 103 points, followed closely by Texas with 92 points. The Lady Tigers dominated the competition, posting 138.5 points, while South Carolina finished second with 109 points.
In addition to sweeping the field as a team, both teams produced the Most Outstanding Athletes of the weekend.
John Moffitt won the honors for the men’s division with his NCAA-leading mark in the long-jump. Moffitt also helped LSU in the triple-jump, finishing in second place.
In the women’s division, LSU’s Hazelann Regis earned Most Outstanding Athlete honors. Regis won the 400-meter race in a meet record and Armory record-time of 51.89 seconds.
LSU set a total of six meet records and three Armory records throughout the course of the weekend.
Track and field coach Pat Henry said the team started well and finished well in New York City.
“We had some great things happen,” Henry said. “A few people surprised us with their performances, accomplishing some things that often only happen once in a lifetime.”
Muna Lee extended her win streak in the 200-meter race to 10 consecutive wins. Lee broke her own Armory Invitational record time of 23.18 seconds — which she set in the 2002 meet — by finishing in 23.06 seconds. Lee also won the 60-meter dash with a mark of 7.36 seconds.
A number of Tigers qualified for the NCAA Championships during the meet. LSU took the top three spots in the triple-jump, with LeJuan Simon, Moffitt and Willie Bradley finishing first, second and third, respectively. All three automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple-jump.
Neisha Bernard-Thomas qualified for the NCAA Championships for the Lady Tigers in the 800-meter race. Bernard-Thomas won the race in 2:04.97, which is third best in Lady Tigers history.
Both teams return to the track on Feb. 20 in Baton Rouge for the LSU Twilight Invitational.
