“I blame myself a little bit,” LSU Guard Cam Carter said. “I just started watching.”
A foul by Cam Carter and a last minute tip by Dre Davis left LSU short once again.
Though the Tigers played tough, it was not enough to stop No. 25 Ole Miss. With inconsistency at the free throw line and lack of three point scoring they stay with one conference win.
Unlike last week’s game against Texas, the Tigers came out of the first half with a six point lead. Big plays from Daimion Collins and some help from Cam Carter gave the team the lead heading into the locker room but they just couldn’t pull it together.
“I need to do better at closing the game,” Collins said. “I had a good first half but it doesn’t matter because I wasn’t disciplined at the end.”
Aggression on the glass gave the Tigers 9 offensive rebounds allowing them to bring in 15 second chance points. Unfortunately for the unit they couldn’t keep their hands clean bringing 19 personal fouls and giving up 20 points.
LSU was the second best free-throw shooting team in the SEC. But after tonight’s performance their free throw percentage drops two points, putting them in 4th.
“We’re 78% from the free throw line in league play,” Head Coach Matt McMahon said. “It’s been a great strength for our team. We went 12-25 tonight, we gave away 4 free points and that led to free throws for them.”
Things were looking up but as the clock ran out so did the gas in the LSU’s squad.
For a team that averages 79 points, Ole Miss allowed LSU to hold them to 59 points. But with 4 minutes left the Purple and Gold’s second half offense was unable to keep up with Ole Miss’ 13-0 run and blew their 11-point lead .
“We’re just staying the course and trusting the process. Getting back in the lab and going to work and just try to come out the next game with a win. ”
McMahon says basketball comes down to who makes fewer mistakes, tonight it was the Rebels. The team heads to Arkansas for their next opponent.
