LSU softball pitcher Jayden Heavener earns consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week awards after a hot start for the freshman through two weekends of play.
Heavener picked up a pair of top-25 complete-game wins at the Purple & Gold Challenge. Her first game was against No. 21 Northwestern on Friday, where she struck out 12 batters and only allowed four hits, one run and five walks through seven innings of work. She returned to the circle on Saturday for the Tigers against No. 17 Virginia Tech, shutting them down through five innings and recording five strikeouts, hits, and two runs through all seven innings.
The freshman ranks eighth in the SEC for strikeouts with 30, including 11 strikeouts looking, which ties her for third-most among SEC pitchers. She has tallied a 3-0 record with a 1.05 ERA, 20 innings pitched and only 9 hits this season.
The Tigers beat the Wildcats 7-1 and the Hokies 7-2 in the games Heavener pitched over the weekend. The Tigers move to 10-0 on the season while outscoring their opponents 72-9 through two weeks.
The Tigers look forward to hosting the LSU Invitational starting on Feb. 21, featuring Penn State, Southern Miss and Nicholls, with the first game beginning on Friday afternoon against the Nittany Lions.
