On a cool Monday night in Baton Rouge, LSU was finally able to get the bats going against in-state opponent Nicholls State, taking care of business with a 13-3 win.
The Tigers plated four runs in the bottom of the first and didn’t look back. It was the big bats for LSU that did the damage, with Jared Jones and Steven Milam the top suspects.
Jones reached base in all of his at-bats with two walks and a homer, while Milam went 2-for-3 with a home run of his own and 5 RBI’s.
Coach Johnson was pleased with the results, most impressed with the quality of at bats put together by the squad.
“We were locked in tonight,” Johnson said after the win. “They just need to play baseball, and I think we’ve seen that.
Starting pitcher William Schmidt had a solid outing, throwing 4.2 innings with one earned run and three strikeouts. Command was a bit of a struggle towards the end of the outing, but he was able to tough it out and keep LSU in a good spot. His head coach sung his praises.
“He is a great pitcher and he’s gonna be a great pitcher,” Coach Johnson said. “I can’t wait to get him on the mound again.”
The team will now hit the road to Texas for a slew of neutral site games, starting with ranked Dallas Baptist, LSU’s first matchup of the sort this season. It’s safe to say that Coach Johnson is ready to get on the road.
“I can’t wait to get on the plane. The weather is gonna be great.”
With the bats cooking, they’ll look to take the heat with them to The Lone Star State.
