LSU has undergone a number of changes since the start of the new Trump administration, and minority students have been paying close attention.
Recently, a student by the name of Sophia Vinasco went viral on TikTok, amassing over 40,000 views as she shared her experience as a latina student at LSU.
In the video, Vinasco describes what she sees as an “illusion of diversity,” voicing her frustration over the struggles to find a sense of community throughout her years at the university.
Those frustrations deepened after the removal of the Latin Center from the student union – a once cherished space where Latin and Hispanic students not only had the chance to build connections, but also found support.
“Instead of enticing people to come here through their diversity efforts, once you get to the school it feels like it doesn’t really exist and you’re kind of left on your own – so there needs to be something else connecting students because saying it isn’t enough, like there needs to be action behind it,” Vinasco said.
For now, students like Vinasco are continuing to push for stronger representation, and encouraging others to search for communities through student organizations.
