Of the 16 guys in today’s pro day, only half of them were invited to the NFL combine. So for the remaining half this was a chance to up their draft stock before April. But one player who may have come in as an underdog put on a show and may be heading to a new city real soon.
Josh Williams, a walk-on in 2019, showed coaches and the NFL the mistake they made when they didn’t invite him to this year’s combine.
“It’s been a long journey for me in this process with getting ready for today.,” Williams said. “A lot of doubts from a lot of people, probably people who don't think that I can run fast. I just had that fire in me to prove everybody wrong.”
The former 2-star prospect, would have had the second highest vertical jump at this year’s combine, and the third highest in NFL history for running backs.
“I already knew it was going to be this type of journey with the way I came into LSU,” Williams said. “I know what LSU means to the state of Louisiana, the way the fans treat the players here. So I didn’t want to be given anything, I wanted to earn everything I got.”
Not only did Williams soar to a 3.5 foot vert, he ran a 4.45 40-yard dash, 10’ 2’’ broad jump and 23 reps on bench. He believes his training and lsu set have set him up for the next level.
“Not only with the competition day in and day out in practice,” Williams said. “But also each and every weekend playing the top competition in the nation, I think subconsciously you get used to the type of schedule that is similar to the NFL.”
Other displays at pro day included Mason Taylor, who had a 4.65 40-yard dash and 28 reps on bench, potentially the second highest by a tight end at this year’s combine.
Kyren Lacy made an appearance at pro day despite his ongoing legal trouble, but some may say the receiver was underwhelming in his performance.
These players will wait for their names to be called in Green Bay on April 24 through 26 at the NFL draft.
