As the road to Oklahoma City officially begins for LSU in Coach Beth Torina’s 14th season, it would be a familiar in-state foe in the Southeastern Lions looking to upset the 10th national seed Tigers.
After a scoreless 1st inning, Junior Center Fielder Jalia Lassiter would open the scoring in the 2nd inning with a 2-RBI Double, but it wouldn’t just be smooth sailing for the Tigers, as Lions reliver Lainee Bailey would come in and settle down the Lions looking to respond.
“The biggest thing for me is trusting my defense,” Bailey said. “Especially in big moments like this.”
SLU would hit Freshman starter Jayden Heavener for 3 runs in the 4th inning to tie the game at 3, capping off the frame with a wild pitch and after a hectic first 3 and a half innings, the game would settle down with both teams not giving an inch as they look to jump into the driver seat of the Baton Rouge Regional.
SLU would break the silence with a 2-out RBI double from Catcher Cydnee Schneider to give the Lions the lead looking to shock the world by upsetting the 10-seed Tigers.
“Just to know that we could finally have that one more run going into the 7th,” Schneider said. “Like Coach Fremin said we’ve lost by a little here before, and to go into that inning with that one run, it was just awesome and I knew Laniee was going to shut the door, she was killing it.”
It would be a combination of Bailey and the Lions defense closing the show for the Tigers, as they enter the 1-0 game against Nebraska on Saturday. LSU Head Coach Beth Torina is still optimistic about her squad heading into Saturday.
“Good thing is we got outs left, we have a chance to answer it tomorrow,” Torina Said. “We’ll work really hard to make sure we answer it tomorrow.
LSU now must win two games tomorrow if they look to reach a Regional Final on Sunday, and that journey starts at 2:30 against the UConn Huskies.
