LSU Baseball continues to cruise through the winner’s bracket, after beating UCLA 9-5 after a major weather delay paused the game during the fourth inning Monday night.
If LSU continues to win, this will be Jay Johnson’s first time making it to the College World Series Finals through the winner’s bracket. However, Coach Johnson knows it takes more than a trip down the winners column to win the College World Series.
“It’s not just winning, to us; it’s how we win and how we get better at this craft,” Johnson said.
LSU and UCLA experienced around a two hour weather delay before the rest of the game was postponed to 10 A.M. Tuesday. This put a dent in the pitching strategy, but Johnson knows nothing is guaranteed in Omaha.
“I think never look too far down the road in this [CWS] tournament. I think you can get yourself in trouble with that,” Johnson said.
The game being rescheduled meant a new pitcher would start on the mound. It was Casan Evans’ day, and he took care of business, pitching 4.1 innings of practically perfect relief. The right-handed pitcher out of Houston is a true freshman for the Tigers, and it is almost unheard of for a player to undergo the development he has in such little time. Johnson worked hard to make sure Evans would one day wear the Purple and Gold.
“I mentioned this the other day — I can’t remember when it was — when we recruited him and got him [Evans], it was a big deal,” Johnson said.
Now the Fighting Tigers will look to face the winner of the Arkansas vs. UCLA game on Wednesday.
