LSU football’s Garrett Nussmeier and Mansoor Delane, who were awarded weekly SEC honors, also earned national recognition after LSU’s Week 1 win over No. 8 Clemson.
Delane was named the Chuck Bednarik Player of the Week and Nussmeier was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week.
The Chuck Bednarik Player of the Week award is presented by the Maxwell Football Club and is given to the defensive player with the most outstanding performance of the week.
Delane made an instant impact in his first game as a Tiger after transferring in from Virginia Tech for his senior season.
Delane received the game ball from head coach Brian Kelly after recording 40 snaps in coverage, allowing just one catch out of eight targets with one interception and two pass breakups.
The Walter Camp National Player of the Week award is presented by the Walter Camp Foundation and is awarded to an offensive and defensive player each week. It’s also the longest standing weekly recognition program in college football, going on 22 seasons of honoring players.
Nussmeier is a fifth-year senior who completed 28 of his 38 pass attempts to record 323 yards and a touchdown, which happened on an eight-yard jump ball to Trey’Dez Green in the fourth quarter of LSU’s Week 1 victory.
LSU now puts its focus on Louisiana Tech to start a three-game stretch at home. LSU and Louisiana Tech kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Death Valley.
