Every year LSU brings in new talent and this season a true freshman corner back has gained national attention.
LSU landed 5-star cornerback DJ Pickett beating out top competitors Miami and Oregon
Coming out of Highschool, DJ Pickett was ranked 11th overall cornerback in the country. Though he has only been on campus for a few short months, he has already made an impact on LSU’s backfield.
“We were really pleased with his first college game and he makes us better,” said Head Coach Brian Kelly.
The true athleticism is clear. In high school, Pickett was a dual sport athlete playing both football and running track & field.
“Ive been really, more impressed with his physicality so far, the coverage goes and stuff he’s always had that,” Defensive Coordinator Blake Baker said. “He’s gotten better, don’t get me wrong, but his physicality he’s turned it up a notch.”
His on-field awareness, agility and pure strength all are qualities that make him stand out, even his veteran teammates have noticed.
“I just speak to DJ, how he carries himself, you know, things he does off the field,” Mansoor Delane says. “He doesn’t act like a freshman. Sometimes I forget he’s a freshman. You know I’m really proud of that guy and look to see a lot more from this season.”
Coming in at 6’5 his height makes him stand out from other cornerbacks on the team. People may be concerned because Pickett is just a freshman, but Brian Kelly says, “We got talented freshmen and if they can help us win, I’m gonna play them all”.
Pickett has the ability to become a great asset to the LSU’s defense. As the season goes on, only time will tell if Pickett can keep this momentum up.
