LSU has fired offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, the team announced Monday. 

Sloan was brought in to LSU in 2022 as the quarterbacks coach by head coach Brian Kelly, who was fired Sunday.

Sloan served that role for two seasons and was then promoted to offensive coordinator in 2024 after Mike Denbrock left the position for the same job at Notre Dame.

Sloan’s offense in 2025 has largely underwhelmed, ranking No. 47 in passing offense, No. 116 rushing offense, No. 91 in red zone offense efficiency, No. 85 in scoring offense and No. 83 in total offense. 

LSU’s offense has averaged 25.7 points per game through 8 games this season. 

Sloan helped develop Jayden Daniels in 2022 and 2023 as his quarterbacks coach, leading to the program’s third Heisman Trophy winner. 

Sloan is originally from Chester, Virginia, and played quarterback at East Carolina University from 2005-2008.

On3 reported that tight ends coach Alex Atkins will serve as the offensive coordinator and play caller for the rest of the season. He was previously the offensive coordinator at Florida State from 2022-24.

Pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton will also be retained for the season, The Advocate reported. Offensive analyst Tim Rattay will become the quarterbacks coach.
