LSU men’s basketball head coach Matt McMahon announced Tuesday that redshirt junior forward Jalen Reed will miss the remainder of the season after injuring his Achilles tendon against Drake on Friday.
“We are absolutely heartbroken and devastated for Jalen,” McMahon said. “His journey back to the court has been inspiring to everyone in our program.”
Reed missed a majority of the 2024-25 season after tearing his ACL in his right leg almost exactly a year ago. His recovery from that injury saw him back on the court two months ahead of schedule.
On Saturday night, Reed was on crutches during LSU’s Emerald Coast Classic championship win against DePaul. The report after the game was that he sustained an injury on his lower left leg and would be further evaluated when the team got back to Baton Rouge.
The team is currently in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, preparing to play Boston College in the ACC/SEC Challenge Wednesday.
It will be the second straight year LSU will play through December and conference play without its promising forward.
“Jalen is a team captain and leader as well as a soon to be LSU graduate,” McMahon said. “While I cannot convey the depth of my disappointment for Jalen, I remain in admiration of his spirit and mental toughness.”
Jalen said that he grew a lot as a leader last year, having to impact the team with his voice instead of his presence on the court.
In his six appearances this year, he averaged 18 minutes, 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds a game.
