The LSU Student Senate presented new legislation Wednesday condemning a Louisiana legislator’s proposal of allowing firearms on campus.
At their weekly meeting, the Senate presented a bill titled SGR 1 that would be sent to the Louisiana House of Representatives to reject recently proposed HB-99.
HB-99 was written by Rep. Danny McCormick, R-Oil City, and would allow all individuals of legal age who legally own a firearm to carry it “in any building or facility on the campus of a public college or university in this state …”
Sen. Jack Appleton, Sen. Alicia Cerquone, Sen. Ava Ryder and Sen. Calvin Feldt presented the legislation and stressed their disapproval as students on the passage of this bill.
“I think part of the contract you sign when you pay your tuition is that you are expected to have some level of safety,” Appleton said. “I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t think I would feel safe if the student next to me was carrying a fire arm.”
After the meeting, Cerquone said that she is not completely opposed to the owning of guns; however, it would be unnecessary to have them allowed on campus.
Prior to their next meeting, SGR 1 will be presented in a committee meeting, where if it is passed it will be presented and then voted on by the Student Senate.
Also during the meeting, SGB 4 was passed by the Senate, which reinstates a code change that was previously removed last semester in order to make changes to the election timeline.
This bill will make it to where code changes will not be put in place until the following semester after they are approved, in order to keep elections fair.
SGCR’s 15-19 were unanimously passed, which appointed new members to the executive branch. Anderson Krupala, Jhennesy Galicinao and Carlin Thierry were appointed to the position of assistant coordinator of student auxiliary services.
Garrett Wainright was appointed to the position of assistant coordinator of technology, innovation, and modernization. Lastly, Sania Akter was appointed to the position of director of graduate and non-traditional students.
There will be no Student Senate session Wednesday due to the Mardi Gras Holiday. Proceedings will pick back up the following week.
