LSU Baseball head coach Jay Johnson spoke to the press following the Tigers opening day 15-5 victory over the Milwaukee Panthers.
The Tigers came into this game as the reigning national champions, and the fans showed up to see what the champs could do to start the season. However, things did not get off to the best start.
GCU transfer first baseman Zach Yorke started things off with a mammoth 378-foot home run to right field in the 2nd inning. Another run came across to score in the 3rd, making it 2-0 LSU.
“We’re losing the best combo of recruits, you know, high school and transfer guys, in the history of the program,” LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson said regarding how important it was to bring in this transfer class.
Then things got rough for Casan Evans when he allowed 4 runs in the 4th inning. The Panthers would tack on another thanks to a solo home run by Charlie Marion, making the score 5-2.
But then, LSU flipped a switch.
“Good response falling behind, I actually love that that happened,” Johnson stated following the slow start.
The Tigers were able to pour it on, scoring 13 runs between the 6th and the 8th innings, leading to the run-rule win.
Transfer infielder Seth Dardar sparked the comeback with his 2-run home run in the 6th inning. Sophomore catcher Cade Arrambide gave the Tigers the lead with his clutch 3-run dinger that made it 8-5 LSU.
The Tigers never looked back and finished strong, walking the game off with an RBI single by Steven Milam. LSU starts the season off 1-0 and will host Milwaukee on Saturday to continue the opening weekend.
