LSU Gymnastics defeats Arkansas 198.075 to 197.100 on LSU’s senior night. The Tigers celebrated seniors: Alexis Jeffrey, Courtney Blackson, Emily Innes, Ashley Cowan, Kathryn Weilbacher, Chase Brock, and Tori Tatum.
The star of the show on Friday night was none other than Kailin Chio who finished her performance with three perfect 10’s. She’s the second LSU Gymnast to ever accomplish the feat and the first since Haleigh Bryant.
Chio missed out on completing a perfect sweep as she didn’t participate in the uneven bars. Head Coach Jay Clark poked fun at his decision not to put her in that rotation.
“But Garrett did say to me, he said, ‘If you would’ve let her do bars she would’ve got a 40,’ but, we’ll never know,” Coach Clark said.
Other standout performers were Konnor McClain, who scored a 9.950 bars and a 9.925 on beam, which Coach Clark thought should have been a 10. Kaliya Lincoln put together a great performance on the floor scoring a 9.975.
Chio credited her and the team’s great showing to the goal of honoring one another through their actions.
“We just talked about honoring each other with our actions, and that’s exactly what I thought about tonight,” Chio said. “And was just free of mind, you know I tell the team to compete free, you know, it works best for me. So I’m hoping for the rest of the team, it clicks for them too.”
At the end of the meet, LSU celebrated its seniors with a dedicated video and ceremony handing out flowers and taking pictures with the gymnasts’ families.
Coach Clark reflected on what a joy it has been to get to know and coach this group of seniors.
“You wish you had more time with them to see where that could go, but they’ve come in here and played a role and certainly been crucial to putting us in the position that we’re in,” Coach Clark said.
Next up for the Tigers is the SEC Championships which will be competitive as ever, with seven of the top 10 teams in the nation all belonging to the SEC.
