The Oklahoma Sooners defeated LSU Softball 8-4 on Sunday afternoon to take the series 2-1. LSU’s Cece Cellura got the start in the circle but was forced out early after two Oklahoma home runs.
Jayden Heavener came in for Cece Cellura. This was Heavener’s second straight appearance and her second straight day throwing 99 pitches. She leads her team in appearances with 18 on the season and she has been an anchor for head coach Beth Torina.
“I thought she did a great job,” Torina said. “I thought she fought for us the whole weekend too, you know, I was proud of her and how she battled.”
Heavener shouldered a lot of work for the Tigers over the weekend, but she could only hold off the powerful Sooner offense for so long. In the loss, Heavener earned five runs and struck out three.
There were plenty of home runs in this outing. Four home runs coming from the Oklahoma side and three home runs coming from the LSU side. LSU shortstop Kylee Edwards had two home runs on the day. She has hit four home runs over the last four games. LSU left-fielder Char Lorenz also shot one out of the park in the loss.
“How cool that she like, kept going and stayed in it and just battled through it,” said Torina. “And it’s so neat to see her turn her season around in just such a short amount of time. She’s done such a good job the last three weeks.”
“I just always say, ‘see ball, hit ball’, and that’s about all,” said Edwards.
Versus Goliath, the Tigers were able to hold their own. With the win in game two, LSU was able to snap the Sooners’ 22-game winning streak.
“I’m proud of the fight of our team,” said Torina. “I thought, you know, scratch back, got within one swing of it there at the end. And, you know they just continued to battle, which I thought was really cool.”
This season, Oklahoma has the best offense in collegiate baseball with 12 runs per game; against the Tigers, they averaged only 4.
“I think we played our butts off,” said Edwards. “It was a really, really good series on both sides. Our pitchers did fantastic, so I mean, this is what happens on Sunday. Both sides get hit really well.”
No stress from the LSU side as they look forward to the next series.
“Just come out next weekend and keep doing the same thing, we’ll be just fine,” said Edwards.
Next up for LSU is a trip to Columbia, Missouri to take on the Missouri Tigers. First pitch of that series is set for Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m. CT inside the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
