Day No. 2 of the 2026 MLB Draft in Philadelphia continued throughout Sunday with three more former LSU Tigers hearing their names called by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.
Right-handed pitcher Grant Fontenot was selected No. 299 overall in the tenth round by The Kansas City Royals. The Lafayette, LA native pitched for the Tigers for two seasons and was part of the National Championship winning 2025 squad.
Over 21 appearances in the 2026 season Fontenot threw 32.1 innings, collecting a 4.18 ERA. He recorded three starts, four saves, 42 strikeouts and 16 walks.
“Grant has grown a ton here at LSU, and he is ready to take on Professional Baseball and will be highly successful. Grant’s best baseball is in front of him,” LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson said of the 23-year-old.
Lefty reliever Santago Garcia was taken No. 372 overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 12th round of the Draft.
Garcia transferred to LSU from Oregon for the 2026 season. During his time at Oregon he made 11 appearances in Big Ten Conference games, where he held batters to just a .171 average.
For the Tigers, Garcia made 21 appearances where he recorded a 5.96 ERA with two saves, 17 walks and 35 strikeouts.
“I think Santi is going to be a great pro,” LSU head coach Jay Johnson said. “He has is tough look as a hitter.”
Connor Benge became the sixth LSU Tiger to be selected in the 2026 Draft. He was picked No. 385 by the Miami Marlins.
“Connor has an electric arm and has tremendous ability,” Jay Johnson said.
The Montgomery, Texas native pitched for the Purple and Gold for two seasons, after pitching for Dallas Baptist University for the 2023-2024 season. Benge recorded a career 6.43 over his collegiate career with 63 strikeouts and 38 walks over 55 appearances.
