Friday night marked the first time I had ever been to an electronic show, and I’m glad that my first time was spent seeing an amazing artist like Wick-it the Instigator. Wick-it is a DJ who apparently has made quite a name for himself in the electronic music world. Since I’m not the biggest fan of the whole dubstep scene, I went into this show thinking that I wasn’t going to be very impressed, but I can say that my mind was changed very quickly. If I could summarize this show in one word, I would probably just say AWESOME. This was not your typical electronic show. The best thing about this show was the variety. There was a little bit of something for everyone. Whether you love dubstep, rap, or even classic rock, the DJ’s who performed on Friday added an electronic twist to all these genres of music.
There were three different DJ’s who performed on Friday and they each had their own distinct style. The first opening DJ went by the name Unicorn Fukr, followed by Chris Brennan, and then the main attraction, Wick-it the Instigator. Unfortunately for Unicorn Fukr, he was on stage pretty early and there wasn’t much of a crowd there yet to enjoy his music. Although, there were a few people who decided to cut loose and go down to the dance floor to zone out to his beats. The trancy feel of Unicorn Fukr’s music eventually had everyone grooving and having a great time. It was super chill and very repetitive, but overall it was great music and I enjoyed listening to it. His music was very different from that of Chris Brennan and Wick-it the Instigator.
Shortly after Unicorn Fukr finished up his set, the audience went wild as the next DJ, Chris Brennan, took the stage. Brennan mixed things up a little more than Unicorn Fukr did, playing a variety of trance, dubstep and electronic hip-hop remixes. His set was almost cut short by a highly intoxicated idiot who jumped on the stage and tried to do a handstand. The guy knocked into Brennan’s equipment and caused things to stop for minute, which led to the crowd booing and yelling out to the rude person in anger. Luckily someone on stage was able to fix the equipment and the show continued. Chris Brennan was a good sport, blowing off the whole incident like it had never happened and finishing strong. By the time Brennan was finishing up, most of the crowd was already nice and inebriated, and ready to get crazy.
Up next was the main attraction, Wick-it the Instigator. This guy had a great personality and wanted to have fun just as much as everyone else down on the floor, and it showed. He didn’t hesitate to interact with the crowd and get everyone pumped up for the show. The most impressive thing about his performance was the variety of music that he mixed. His set consisted of a few of his original songs, along with numerous remixes of music by other artists that stretched across several different genres. Wick-it played electronic remixes of songs by Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tupac, Metallica and many more. He even played an electronic remix of “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins. Now, I know most of you may have just read that and thought, “Really? Phil Collins?” Trust me, I thought the same thing at first, but the remix turned out to be amazing, just like every other remix that Wick-it played. My favorite track by far was a dubstep remix of the Pulp Fiction theme that even had audio clips from the movie thrown in. At one point he even randomly pulled out an electric guitar and started shredding on it. It was obvious that this guy has a true musical talent and a love for what he does.
It’s safe to say that going to this show certainly changed my views on electronic music. After going to this show, I’ve become much more opened minded when it comes to this genre. Wick-it the Instigator took his music to a whole new level by doing things that I have never seen or heard any other DJ do before. I was highly impressed, and the show itself was a blast. If this guy is ever back in Baton Rouge, I’ll be there, and you should too.
