It’s no surprise that there are five burrito restaurants in and around LSU’s campus. A cheap, quick way to get a day’s worth of calories, burritos are a cornerstone of any student’s diet.
But which local eatery actually gives you the most burrito for your money? LEGACY magazine decided to find out by weighing burritos from the five restaurants closest to campus — Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina, Zippy’s Burrito’s Taco’s and More, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Izzo’s Illegal Burrito and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. The ingredients were simple: chicken, beans, rice, sour cream and cheese on a flour tortilla.
We discovered that not all burritos are created equal. While the on-campus Salsarita’s boasts a burrito that cost 38 cents per ounce, a similar meal at Zippy’s costs 88 cents per ounce. Even when the chips that come with the Zippy’s meal were factored into the weight, it only came to 60 cents per ounce, still being the least cost-efficient.
However, it’s worth noting that the two heaviest burritos, from Chipotle and Salsarita’s, contained the most rice, adding significantly to their weight.
Are the savings worth it?
• #1 Chipotle
While chicken is my least favorite meat to put on a Chipotle burrito, the other ingredients make up for the overly spicy chicken. Chipotle’s lime and cilantro rice can’t be beat and is a large reason this is my favorite burrito.
• #2 Zippy’s
Despite being the least cost efficient, Zippy’s actually has a pretty good burrito. The meat may be a little dry, but it’s well-seasoned and blends with the other ingredients.
• #3 Salsarita’s
The only flavor present in a Salsarita’s burrito comes from the sour cream. The beans, chicken and even the rice hardly contain any flavor, leaving the burrito to be dominated by the dairy-heavy flavors of the sour cream and cheese.
• #4 Izzo’s
Bad chicken and not enough of it. Izzo’s chicken is unbelievably bland in addition to having been severely undercooked. The other ingredients aren’t anything special either.
• #5 Fuzzy’s
Fuzzy’s commits a cardinal sin of food – being boring. The entire burrito isn’t awful or great, it’s almost impossible to have an opinion on it. Flavorless without being unappetizing, I didn’t know it was possible to make food this mediocre.
