The second episode of “American Horror Story: Freak Show” brought more of the characters’ storylines to light.
The episode again was 90 minutes, and while it slightly dragged, the show is giving us detail after detail about how these characters live.
First off, Twisty.
Twisty is still slightly a mystery, with us having no details on his past, but more of his serial killer ways were shown. The children he has locked in his home saw more of Twisty’s murderous ways, with his reveal of a victim’s head shoved in his clown bag. Twisty may just be asking for laughs and companionship, but so far he’s doing a terrible job at it.
However, Dandy may be the character that sticks by Twisty’s side.
Dandy received much more air time this episode, and we saw that, while he may not be considered a freak in the freak show terms, he’s more than a little crazy. Dandy wants to be a star and when he gets turned down from joining the show, he goes a bit mental. This may be what leads to his fascination with Twisty, who he can now put all his energy into.
Two other characters were introduced this week, and they’re already causing trouble.
The strong man, Dell Toledo, and the hermaphrodite, Desiree Dupree, come looking for jobs after a tumultuous ending to their performances in Chicago.
Elsa Mars lets them into the cast, but quickly regrets it once the pair wrecks havoc over how the show is run. Toledo demands for a matinee time when guests can’t attend the evening show because of the town’s murder curfew. He also self proclaims himself in charge of freaks, making sure they stay in line and knows who’s boss.
Jimmy Darling can attest to this after taking the gang to the diner and Toledo quickly showing his disapproval by beating him up. Darling attempts to get Toledo and Dupree out of the freak show by framing them for the murder of the cop in the first episode, but Toledo quickly outsmarts him and gets Meep framed and dead instead.
To add a plot twist on top of it all, Toledo is Darling’s father and his mother, Ethel Darling wants them to have no connection. However, it looks to be Darling has other plans by his desire to make Toledo’s life a living hell.
The twins, Bette and Dot Tattler, seem to be making a home for themselves at the Freak Show with the pair becoming the opening act.
But the two’s first big performance leads to Dot being the talented performer and Bette falling to the way side. Mars is also upset, worried the pair may steal her ringmaster spotlight.
With Bette incredibly jealous, Mars uses it to her advantage by attempting to instigate Bette to make a dramatic move– murder her sister.
