In a bill sponsored by Student Government Senator and finance junior Andrew Mahtook, Student Government allocated $3,000 out of its initiatives account to give to the E.J. Ourso College of Business for the second annual Jumping Into Business week, which Business College Council president Michael Grieshaber said cost $9,000 total.
Mahtook said the Student Government Senate took the money out of its initiatives
account because the event falls under the guidelines of which the account funds can be used. The account had around $46,000 before the legislation was written.
Student organizations can receive money from Student Government by applying for funding.
Mahtook said the initiatives account is used as a “startup account” to encourage student organizations’ own individual initiatives, but the account isn’t used often.
The College of Business sought $2,000 from three corporate sponsors, like the consulting firm Deloitte, but more funds were needed by the Business College Council.
Mahtook said Grieshaber
approached him and asked for monetary assistance from Student Government.
“It comes down to students approaching us,” Mahtook said.
Grieshaber said having the Student Government funds “helps a great deal” because the event would have been on a smaller scale without the funds.
“We wouldn’t have funds for such a big event,” Grieshaber said.
Mahtook said the funds for Jumping Into Business week will help student organizations attract students within the College of Business.
“It’s going directly to business students for the benefit of getting real-world business guidance,” Mahtook said.
The College of Business and Business College Council along with business fraternities, Alpha Kappa Psi and Pi Sigma Epsilon, are co-sponsoring the event, which aims to get more students involved in the College of Business’ student organizations.
The College of Business currently has about 20 student organizations, and each is trying to attract business college students.
Mahtook said the event is for students to “get face time with student organizations.”
Part of Jumping Into Business week will be a canned food drive among all 20 student organizations. The cans will be donated to the LSU Food
Pantry.
