He’s king of the jungle, he’s the coolest cat around…he’s Mike the Tiger.
Who is he? That remains a mystery, but hands down he’s a few of our favorite students. The Mike team consists of five of the most spirited men on campus.
“We’re crazy inside and outside the suit,” Mike’s team captain says. “That’s just how we’re wired, people just look at us and think we’re crazy but ahh if they ever knew we we’re in the mascot suit, ahhh that makes sense why Mike is so crazy and wild?”
Mike starts his game day off with a dance party to get pumped to pump up the fans. Around eleven, he heads to the parade grounds to tailgate with the fans.
By 4 p.m. he leads the parade on Victory Hill. Every parade, Mike chest bumps Todd Hotard. Hotard was Mike from 1996-1999, now he’s a captain in the army’s National Guard.
After the parade, it’s game time. Mike makes a quick costume change and heads out to the field to cheer on the team.
“Crowd surfing is probably the most fun thing of all,” Mike says. “I love getting to the top because you never really get to do that ever in your life. We get to go up in the coolest stadium in the world, it’s really awesome.”
Mike doesn’t just cheer on the football team, he goes to every sporting event and attends community service events. That includes weddings and other special LSU events on campus.
While Mike is our number one fan, he’s also nationally recognized.
In 2012, Mike won 4th place at the National Mascot Competition in Florida. He was also a part of the Capital One Mascot Challenge Team in 2013.
Mike will compete in the national competition again later this year.
To enter the competition, mascots must create a highlight video. Mike has been practicing his on camera skills on instagram to get ready for the big competition.
You can follow Mike the Tiger on instagram at @lsumiketiger, or you can follow him around campus this Saturday as we take on New Mexico State.
