LSU student Richard Aaron Bee was arrested after he was heard making threats over a CB radio.
The 21-year-old said he had high caliber rifles and special ammunition. This prompted the LSU Police Department to shut down the Student Union parking garage and Barnes and Noble Bookstore for 40 minutes Tuesday night.
LSU PD said they found Bee on the top floor of the garage wrapped in wires and dressed in camouflage. His classmate, Casey Chapman said she was surprised when she saw his face on the news.
“Pure shock, it was the first thing that popped up when I clicked on the article,” said Chapman. “I was just like ‘oh my god I know that dude.’”
An emergency alert was sent by text message and email that warned students to “stay clear” of the bookstore and parking garage. There was also an e-mail sent with the subject line “armed robbery.” However, there was no armed robbery or armed suspect at the scene.
An LSU spokesperson said the inaccurate warning was a glitch in the emergency alert system. Cory Lalonde talked to Tiger TV two weeks ago to discuss the importance of the emergency text message system.
“We do encourage people to pay attention and to please do what we ask them to do in those messages because there is a reason for it,” said Lalonde.
Students like Chapman said they think this mistake is scary especially with the recent shootings at other Universities.
“I had to find out this morning rather than last night about what was going on,” said Chapman. “I definitely think that is something they should work on.”
Tiger TV has contacted LSU PD for further information but they said they are still in the process of investigating.
