In a rain soaked Death Valley, the LSU Tigers and McNeese State Cowboys played eight plays in the first quarter before the game was halted due to lightning in the Baton Rouge area. After a lengthy weather delay, the 2015 opener was officially cancelled.
“I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to play,” said LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva. “It boiled down to player safety. At the end of the day we have to be concerned about the player’s welfare.”
It was the first game cancellation since 1918 for LSU Football, dampening what was supposed to be a joyous day for the Tigers and their fans.
“We would like to have prepared best for Mississippi State having had a first game under our belt,” said LSU head coach Les Miles. “That’s why we waited as long as we could.”
The three-plus hour weather delay sent many fans packing. Except for a select few who braved the elements hoping that the game would eventually resume.
“To the fans, thanks for coming. Thanks for being a part,” said Miles. “We tried. We gave everything, every consideration we could to be on the field playing that game.”
the Tigers now head on the road to a hostile environment in Starkville for a rematch with Dak Prescott and Mississippi State. With last season’s brutal loss still fresh in their memories, sophomore quarterback Brandon Harris and the Tigers will be forced to be baptized by fire in 2015.
“There’s gonna be some carry over in the preparation as we go to Mississippi State.”
