There were unconfirmed reports of a hostage situation at the Mini Mart on Highway 93 in St. Landry’s parish near Opelousas after an officer was shot and two people were stabbed were shot Wednesday.
The stabbing took place three blocks from the store. After the stabbing, a SUnset Police Officer responded to the incident and was shot. The suspect then drove into the front of a Mini Mart and barricaded himself in an inner office.
A swat team is currently on the scene according to St. Landry Sheriff Parish Bobby Guidroz. Guidroz also confirmed that the suspect stabbed two people, shot an officer and barricaded himself indoors.
The sheriff says that there are currently no hostages, everyone was able to leave the store safely, but he is currently barricaded in the store.
Negotiations are ongoing, but the Sheriff Guidroz says that there is a time limit and that ST. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Deputies will fire tear gas into the building in an effort to get the suspect to vacate the building.
“We’re not going to sit here all night and beg,” says Guidroz to the media.
The suspects brother is on the scene assisting in the negotiations.
Napoleon is currently on lock down according on employee at Cafe Josephine.
The officer was transported to the hospital in a helicopter. There are no reports on the officers condition. Several helicopters and Acadian Ambulances are present because there may be multiple scenes according to WAFB.
This comes just three days after State Trooper Steven Vincent was shot when going to help a man whose truck was stuck in a ditch.
Update: KATC in Lafayette reports that a body is still on the lawn of the home where the stabbing initially took place.
Update: The suspect is in custody.
Update: One of the stabbing victims, the Grand Coteau Mayor’s sister, has been confirmed dead.
