In response to “Evolution: theory, not fact,” in Feb. 7 edition of Technician.
One, the theory of evolution is built on years of painstaking research and evidence collection. Charles Darwin did not put forward the idea on a moment’s whim, many years of travel and study preceded the publication of On the Origin of Species. The reason why it is called a theory and not a hypothesis is the evidence we have to back it up.
Two, intelligent design and creationism on the other hand, have no scientific evidence to back them up. Without facts to back them up, they are hypotheses. They are ideas people choose to believe in, without feeling the necessity for scientific research or study.
In a university setting, as the general expectation is to impart knowledge as gathered by mankind using scientific methods, I cannot find fault with Ms. Murphy’s professor for presenting the theory of evolution the way he did.
