Three college-aged people were held at gun point at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning on campus.
Two females and a male were walking across a parking lot near Chimes and Cypress streets when they were approached by a young male wearing a bandana who robbed the three victims at gunpoint, said LSU Police Department spokeswoman Maj. Helen Haire.
LSUPD said Cypress Street turns into Alaska street near the softball field on the north side of campus.
The suspect then left the scene in a waiting vehicle that fled down Alaska and Chimes streets toward Nicholson Drive.
Haire said the male victim ran after the fleeting vehicle when the vehicle stopped and a shot was fired toward the victims. No injures have been reported, Haire said.
Haire said the victim described the robber’s gun as a rifle.
The victim described the vehicle as a four-door, gray or silver Chrysler sedan.
Hair said the suspect is a male approximately 5 feet, 3 inches tall and it is unclear if the suspect was juvenile, although he did appear to be young.
Haire said it is unclear if any or all of the three victims were University students.
LSUPD was called to the scene soon after the incident and the investigation is ongoing. Haire said although there is no current evidence to suggest a connection to two previous armed robberies on campus this semester, LSUPD is considering possible connections in their investigation.
LSUPD responded to a 9:15 report Jan. 22 from a female student who was robbed at gun point in the West Campus parking lot near Stubbs Hall.
On Jan. 4, LSUPD responded to a 5:56 p.m. call from a University student who was robbed at gunpoint by two male suspects near Middleton Library. The suspects, ages 14 and 15, were arrested and booked into East Baton Rouge juvenile detention center after being seen again in Middleton Library on Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
The Feb. 9 incident is the third armed robbery on or near campus since the Dec. 13 double homicide at Edward Gay Apartments on campus.
Daniel McBride, Daily Reveille assistant news editor, heard gunfire early Saturday morning and left his house on Alaska Street to see where the shots came from.
McBride said he approached three people, one man and two women, who said they had been mugged by a man at gun point in the parking lot near West Campus Apartments and Graham Hall. McBride said the three people said the man had a larger gun, maybe a rifle.
McBride said five police cars arrived on scene several minutes after he got there.
