A college-aged man escaped a fire Sunday night in the Tiger Plaza apartment complex.
The resident fell asleep while cooking. A pot left on the stove caught fire around 10:15 p.m., said Robert Combs, Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman.
The man awoke to the sight of smoke and attempted to extinguish the fire, according to Combs. When the student was unable to contain the fire, he called 911 and fled the apartment.
Combs said the man is a student but could not confirm whether he is an LSU student.
Combs estimated the fire’s damage to cost between $15,000 and $20,000. He said fire damage was contained to the kitchen area, but smoke damaged a larger portion of the apartment.
