NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Indicted U.S. Rep. William Jefferson has notched another victory in his fight for political survival, winning a Democratic primary runoff over a former television reporter who argued that scandal had obliterated the influence Jefferson built during 18 years in Congress. Jefferson, 61, became Louisiana’s first black congressman since Reconstruction when he took office in 1991. He celebrated victory as Barack Obama was on his way to becoming the first black president. “This is an extraordinary, magical night,” he told a jubilant crowd of supporters watching presidential returns on a giant television screen.Facing trial on bribery and money laundering charges, he defeated a 31-year-old white opponent, Helena Moreno.—-Contact The Daily Reveille’s news staff at [email protected]
