BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A lawyer for the state Democratic Party is questioning whether non-Republican voters are being unfairly targeted to have their registrations canceled.
Attorney Randy Piedrahita told a House committee on Tuesday that there appeared to be irregularities in voter registration challenges in some parishes of the state. He says Democrats are targeted for possible removal from the rolls more than Republicans.
Secretary of State Jay Dardenne denied any systematic targeting of any group in voter cancellations. He says more Democrats are registered in the state than Republicans and statewide, the numbers of voters whose registrations were canceled were about equivalent to the breakdown in voter registration.
Voters are removed from the rolls if they no longer live in the area where they are registered, if they have died or if they have provided fraudulent information.
