Andrew Remson, Student Government director of Athletics, announced the price of the bus trip to the South Carolina football game will be $120 at the senate meeting Wednesday. That price includes a ticket to the game, two meals, snacks and a T-shirt. For the first time, students will be able to purchase tickets online, which will go on sale Monday at 5:00 p.m.The first 240 students to register for a ticket will receive one. SG settled on 240 after considering how many students originally requested away game tickets and factoring in 10 chaperones. The departure time of the bus trip is still pending on the start of the game. Remson said no student fees will support the bus trip. Funding for the trip came from corporate sponsors, Remson said. Later, the Senate approved the appointment of Taylor Craft, history junior, to the position of SG commissioner of elections. Craft takes over the position vacated by Jeffrey Noel, who resigned suddenly Friday. “We were just as surprised as anyone else to hear Jeff Noel had resigned,” Robertson said. “[Craft] is familiar with the election process having just run last spring, and he was willing to take over the role.”Craft made a name for himself when he ran for SG president in the spring 2008 election as part of the “Do Nothing” platform. The Senate passed two fee increase proposals, which will appear on the fall ballot for students’ approval. The first will assess a fee increase of $3.00 per fall semester per student to go toward the Organizational Relief Fund, which alleviates the price of travel for student organizations. Senator Kelli Eason, mass communication, said the ORF fee hasn’t increased since 1981. Currently, students pay $3.25 every spring to support ORF. “The price of travel has beyond skyrocketed,” Eason said. “For many organizations, ORF is their only means of funds for travel.”The Senate also approved a resolution to place a fee increase of $2.50 per student per semester to fund SG Programming, Support and Initiatives Fund. Mainly, the resolution requested an 80-cent increase to support Recreational Sport Club Teams, $1.30 to support Groovin’ on the Grounds and a fall concert, and 40 cents for Organization Initiatives. Senator Emily Chambers, arts and sciences, said students would not be willing to pay extra fees for a concert. “If they want to pay for the concert, they can pay an admission price,” Chambers said. “I know a lot of students who couldn’t care less about a concert and are just trying to get out of [college] by spending the least amount of money possible.”Senator Parker Wishik, mass communication, said students should be allowed to vote on the increase. “It’s obvious that we haven’t had time to talk to our constituents to see how they feel,” Wishik said. “So let’s put it on the ballot, and let them vote.”Colorado Robertson, SG president, must approve both resolutions before sending them to administrators for approval. LSU System President John Lombardi must approve the resolutions before they can be placed on the fall ballot for a student vote. The Senate unanimously approved the amendments to the SG bylaws. The portion of the bylaws that stirred debate at the Sept. 24 Senate meeting was changed to say a “president of an additional campus multicultural organization recognized by Campus Life, as appointed by the student body president” shall sit on the president’s cabinet. The previous formatting omitted “recognized by Campus Life” and raised concerns about vagueness.Drew Prestridge, SG speaker pro-tempore, said having the president of a multicultural organization will help to increase diversity in SG.—-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
